RISK FACTORS

Domestic Violence

Suicide and intimate partner violence are both major public health crises — and the link between them has never been more apparent. Studies have shown a strong connection between physical, sexual or psychological harm by a current or former partner or spouse and suicide.

  • 28% of South Dakota women and 24% of South Dakota men have experienced intimate partner physical violence, sexual violence or stalking.
  • Women who have been victims of intimate partner violence and whose partners have threatened or attempted suicide are at a greater risk than those whose partners had never threatened or attempted suicide.
  • Younger victims of intimate partner violence are more at risk for suicidality than older victims.
  • About 1 in 5 women who have experienced intimate partner violence have threatened or attempted suicide.

South Dakota’s statewide Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-430-7233) is available 24/7 to help people in domestic violence situations, as well as friends or loved ones who are concerned for someone else. The Domestic Violence Hotline provides crisis intervention, support and referrals to local crisis shelters.
