High School Toolkits

Children and teens spend significant time in school. Teachers and others who interact with students daily are in a prime position to recognize the signs of suicide risk and to make appropriate referrals. School personnel need regular training to help them build the skills and confidence to identify and assist vulnerable youth in seeking help. We’ve collected the resources below to assist schools in implementing effective suicide prevention programming and policies. Visit our Educators page for more information on the educator’s role in suicide prevention and available resources to educators in South Dakota.

Prevention

  • Preventing Suicide: A Toolkit for High Schools is available for free download from SAMHSA. It assists school personnel in designing and implementing strategies that prevent suicide and promote behavioral health.
  • Toolkit for Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention: The content of this toolkit is drawn from State and National guidelines and from current research and recommendations regarding youth mental wellness and suicide prevention. Information about what schools can do to promote youth mental wellness before mental health concerns arise, how to recognize and respond to a mental health crisis, and how to support a school community after a suicide loss is included.
  • 13 Reasons Why Toolkit Chances are you’ve either heard of Netflix’s series 13 Reasons Why, or your students have seen or have expressed an interest in watching this.
  • Suicide Prevention Across the Educational Continuum: This series provides participants with information related to suicide prevention across the educational continuum for youth, young adults, and college students. Course topics include: how to assess for suicidality in school settings, prevention interventions for the K-12 populations and in a college setting, crisis response planning for suicidal patients, and new research regarding the relationships between genetics and those at risk of suicide.
